Deadly Pedestrian Accidents in South Carolina
On our state’s roads, there were 121 fatalities of pedestrians and 10 deaths of bikers reported in 2020. Walking along the road may seem to be a great way to get around, but pedestrians are at risk of being seriously injured if they are hit by a motor vehicle. Reckless drivers fail to share the roads as they should with those traveling on foot.
Sadly, if you are hurt in a pedestrian collision in South Carolina, you are not alone. The South Carolina Department of Transportation reports that in terms of population, the state had the second-highest rate of pedestrian and cyclist fatalities in the US in 2020.
Legally, drivers have a responsibility of care to for pedestrians. To prevent hurting themselves, other drivers, or pedestrians, motorists must drive in accordance with the law.
