Townsend, GA (February 15, 2023) – A man was killed in a fatal truck accident that took place on a highway in Townsend on the morning of Wednesday, February 15.

According to Georgia State Patrol officials, the accident happened at 2:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 around the area of mile marker 62. Police confirmed that a driver was traveling in a box truck in the area when their vehicle was involved in a rear-end collision with a tractor-trailer. Both vehicles sustained damages in the accident.

Paramedics, fire crews, and other McIntosh County responders were immediately called to the scene to help those in need. The driver of the box truck, who has been identified as 52-year-old Derek Dekle, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. There was a passenger in his vehicle who was flown to a Savannah hospital for medical treatment, but his current condition is not yet known. Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

The roadway was blocked in several northbound lanes of traffic for several hours as police worked to clear the scene.
