Macon, GA – Rupert Ward Killed in Bicycle Accident at Irwinton Rd & Crystal Lake Dr
Macon, GA (November 7, 2022) – A man was killed in a fatal bicycle accident that took place at a Macon intersection on Saturday morning, November 5.
According to Bibb County officials, the accident happened around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Irwinton Road and Crystal Lake Drive. Police confirmed that a bicyclist was traveling east on Irwinton on his bicycle when he was suddenly struck by two vehicles in the area. The first driver fled the scene without stopping but the other stopped in the area.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other Bibb County responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The bicyclist, who has since been identified as 50-year-old Rupert Ward, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Nobody else sustained injuries in the accident.
The roadway was blocked in the area of the intersection for an extended period of time. Police worked to clear the scene as quickly as possible.
No further details have been released but the investigation into the circumstances of the collision remains ongoing.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the bicyclist whose life was taken in this collision.
Bicycle Accidents in Georgia
Though bicycling is a great way to get from one place to another and get exercise all in one, it also comes with a variety of risks. The unfortunate reality is that many drivers who share our roads do not stay aware of bicyclists on our roads and sometimes cause accidents involving them. This can be a life-altering experience for a bicyclist, who is guaranteed to become seriously injured in an accident. In 2015 in the U.S., it was reported that approximately 467,000 people were injured in bicycle accidents and many even lost their lives.
