Gainesville, GA – Hit-and-Run Crash with Injuries at Athens Hwy & Smallwood Rd 

Gainesville, GA (October 17, 2022) – Around 9 p.m. on Saturday night, October 15, a hit-and-run accident with injuries occurred at an intersection in Gainesville. 

According to Hall County officials, the accident happened at the intersection of Athens Highway and Smallwood Road. Police confirmed that 19-year-old Jose Luis Muniz was traveling south in a BMW passenger car when he suddenly collided with a Honda Odyssey minivan that was making a left turn in the area. The two vehicles sustained severe damage in the collision. Muniz fled the scene following the crash. 

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. Five people inside the van, identified as three teens and two adults, sustained a variety of injuries in the collision. 

The roadway was blocked near the intersection for an extended period of time. Muniz was charged with serious injury by vehicle, cruelty to children, reckless driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and more. 

No further details have been released but the investigation into the accident continues.
