South Carolina’s Rate of Commercial Vehicle Wrecks
The number of accidents involving trucks in South Carolina increased significantly in 2013. As of 2015, 67 out of every 1,030 cars involved in fatal accidents in South Carolina were heavy trucks. To put it in perspective, that’s the same as 6.5% of all road deaths in the state. A total of 49 people in other cars, 10 truck drivers, and 6 pedestrians were killed directly due to these collisions.
The significance of large commercial vehicles to the U.S. economy cannot be overstated. Trucks of all shapes and sizes, including the ubiquitous big rigs, can be spotted all around South Carolina, just as they can anywhere else in the country, carrying everything from household goods to entire buildings. The state’s closeness to major seaports and various regional airports, rail lines, and highways makes cargo transit almost a way of life here. Roads, highways, and railways in this area hold special significance in this regard, as a large number of commercial vehicles traversing our highways means a higher likelihood of deadly wrecks.
