Q: Can a child receive SSD benefits?

A: Yes, provided his or her parents have paid enough into the system and he or she has a qualifying disability.

Q: Can I receive both SSDI benefits and workers’ compensation?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I get SSDI benefits if I have been self employed?

A: The answer depends on whether you have contributed enough into the Social Security system through tax dollars. If you have, then you may be eligible for benefits, provided you have a qualifying disability.

Q: When will I start receiving my benefits?

A: Benefits begin the first month after the fifth month of disability.

Q: If I return to work, will I lose my benefits?

A: If you have nominal earnings that do not exceed $720 per month, you may still receive SSDI benefits. Also, you may return to work for a trial period. If you are able to work then you will eventually be phased out of the SSDI program. If your disability keeps you from returning to work permanently, you will not lose your benefits.

Q: If my condition has gotten worse, can my benefits increase?

A: No, your benefit amount is based on your earnings record, not the severity of your disability.
