
Demorest, GA (February 21, 2023) – On Monday evening, February 20, a head-on collision with injuries took place in Demorest and led to the arrest of a DUI driver.
According to Georgia State Patrol officials, the accident happened on Habersham Mills Road. Police confirmed that 27-year-old Katherine Melton from Clarkesville was traveling east in an Acura TL when she suddenly passed another vehicle around a curve in the area. Her vehicle suddenly collided with a Grand Caravan headed westbound and being operated by 67-year-old Rebecca Winchell.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other local responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. Melton sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. Winchell, as well as a teenager inside her vehicle, were also injured and taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The roadway was blocked in the area for over an hour until police cleared the scene near Habersham Mills Complex Drive.
Police confirmed that Melton was driving under the influence at the time of the collision. She has since been charged with DUI, failing to exercise due care, and passing in a no-passing zone.
