South Carolina Motor Vehicle Crashes
Poor driving skills are a common contributor to automobile accidents, particularly when it comes to those caused by inexperienced drivers. Sadly, automobile accidents caused by reckless drivers occur shockingly often in South Carolina. Careless driving includes behaviors including speeding, not stopping for pedestrians, and following too closely. Adding insult to injury, drunk driving is also a major cause of death in the Palmetto State.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety publishes yearly fact books based on data collected during the year. And needless to say, it doesn’t take a lot of digging to find out that South Carolina has an unacceptable rate of traffic fatalities and injuries. In 2018, over 38,000 people were injured in accidents around the state.
The remaining accidents were categorized as “other injuries.” In that same year, there were 58,053 reported injuries on South Carolina’s roads, down from over 60,500 the year before, though almost 95% of accidents leading to injury were caused by driver error. Of the 38,138 incidents of nonfatal injuries, 11,121 were attributed in part to excessive speed. Moreover, of the 969 fatal accidents, 218 were caused by speeding and 91 were caused by drivers who failed to yield.
