Covington, GA (February 2, 2023) – On Monday night, January 30, a woman was killed in a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run accident in Covington. According to Newton County officials, the accident happened on GA-36 around the area of the Bethel Bara Baptist Church. Police confirmed that an adult female and mother of seven children was walking home from the store when she was suddenly struck by a passenger vehicle.
Police confirmed that the vehicle, believed to be a Ford, fled the scene of the accident but may have damage to its front end and passenger side. Paramedics, fire crews, and several other Covington responders were dispatched to the scene to help those in need.
The pedestrian, who has since been identified as 44-year-old Deanna Grimes, was tragically pronounced dead due to traumatic injuries stemming from the accident. Due to the severity of the accident, a large portion of the road was blocked in the area for some time. This led to delays until the scene was cleared.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues. Police will update with new information as it becomes available.
We would like to offer our warmest condolences to the family and friends of the victim who lost her life as a result of this collision.
