South Carolina Deadly Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrian fatalities are on the rise in the United States, with a nearly 10% increase in 2015. A pedestrian has very little protection in the event of a traffic accident, which means they are more likely to endure life-threatening injuries. There were 5,376 pedestrian deaths nationwide in 2015. Statistics show that a pedestrian was killed every 1.6 hours on average that year, with a pedestrian injury every 7.5 minutes.
The rise in fatal pedestrian collisions can be attributed to a number of factors. In South Carolina, distracted driving has become a major safety issue, but it isn’t the only cause of pedestrian accidents. Statistics show that the state has one of the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities in the country. According to our Charleston personal injury attorneys, the majority of these accidents are caused by driver distraction, intoxication, or general negligence behind the wheel.
