Carnesville, GA (February 2, 2023) – A man lost his life in a fatal car accident that took place on a major roadway in Carnesville on Wednesday afternoon, February 1. According to Georgia State Patrol officials, the accident happened in the afternoon hours on GA-59 around the area of One Mile Lane. Police confirmed that 48-year-old Marcus Johnson was driving a transport van carrying several disabled passengers aged 25 to 53. The driver suddenly lost control, causing the van to veer off the side of the road and crashed head-on into a tree.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other local responders were called to the scene to help those in need. Johnson, as well as three rear passengers, were transported to St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.
The front-rear passenger, identified as 73-year-old Jimmy Tate, was trapped in the van and had to be extricated by fire crews. He was tragically pronounced dead at the hospital due to traumatic injuries.
A portion of the road was blocked in the area of the accident for some time. This led to delays until police fully cleared the scene. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues at this time.
We would like to offer our warmest condolences to the family and friends of the victim whose life was taken in this horrific accident. We also hope that the injured parties receive a full recovery from their injuries.
