Augusta, GA – Five Firefighters Hurt During Fire off Gordon Hwy
Augusta, GA (April 19, 2022) – Five firefighters sustained injuries in a storage company fire that took place on Monday morning, April 18.
According to officials, the fire was initially reported around 9:49 a.m. by an off-duty firefighters who witnessed smoke in the air. When fire crews were called in, they went to check out the scene and saw that the fire started at Simply Self Storage company at 2134 Gordon Highway. The fire quickly spread out of control and affected approximately 50 to 76 storage units, causing anywhere from minimal to severe damages.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were dispatched to the scene. A total of five firefighters sustained injuries as they were working to bring the fire under control. The fire crews were hospitalized with various injuries such as muscle strains and smoke inhalation. Several other firefighters were also evaluated at the scene but are expected to be okay.
The storage facility was blocked off in the area for an extended period of time. Police quickly worked to clear the scene as fire crews brought the fire under control and salvaged as many storage containers as possible.
The investigation into the circumstances of the fire remains ongoing.
