Athens, GA (March 2, 2023) – A woman was killed in a fatal head-on collision that took place on an Athens highway on Wednesday morning, March 1.
According to Athens-Clarke Police officials, the accident happened at 5:25 a.m. on the Athens Perimeter near the area of South Milledge Avenue. Police confirmed that 81-year-old Lizzie Rouhlac was driving her Volkswagen Jetta when she was suddenly involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes Benz being operated by a 60-year-old male due to reasons that are not entirely known. Both vehicles sustained immense damage due to the accident.
Several Athens responders, including paramedics and fire crews, were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. Rouhlac was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. The 60-year-old male, however, sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He is expected to recover from these injuries.
Due to the severity of the crash, a large portion of the road was blocked near the intersection. Police worked to quickly clear the scene.
No further details have been released, but the investigation into the accident remains ongoing.
We offer our warmest condolences to the family and friends of the victim whose life was taken prematurely in this horrific accident.
