Albany, GA (January 30, 2023) – A woman was killed in a fatal house fire that took place in Albany on the morning of Sunday, January 29.
According to Dougherty County officials, the accident happened in the early morning hours at 600 8th Avenue. Police confirmed that neighbors noticed flames erupting from the home and called emergency services. Fire crews arrived at the scene and searched the home, finding a woman inside and pulling her out.
Paramedics and numerous other Dougherty County responders were called to the scene. The woman who was pulled out of the home was identified as 66-year-old Rebecca Gilliam. She was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to harm caused by the fire.
Neighbors commented that the fire blazed out of control and engulfed the entire home within minutes. It is believed that the victim had numerous oxygen tanks in the home, which contributed to the fire blazing out of control.
Police did not confirm the cause of the fire. Their investigation into the circumstances of the fire continues at this time.
We offer our warmest condolences to the family and friends of the victim whose life was taken in this accident.
Fires break out within seconds throughout Georgia in both residential and commercial areas. In 2020, it was reported that the national average for fire fatalities was 6 deaths per every 1,000 fires. On top of this, about 21 people are injured in fires out of every 1,000. The truth is, most fires can be prevented but continue to happen due to reckless acts caused by others. Though some are due to human error, others happen due to faulty wiring or equipment in a household or business. If you have lost someone you love in a fatal fire, it is crucial that you speak with an attorney that you can rely on as soon as possible.
