Abbeville, GA (February 21, 2023) – At 8:45 p.m. on Saturday night, February 18, a deputy was hurt in a pedestrian accident while directing traffic in Abbeville.
According to Wilcox County deputies, the accident happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 280 and Starr Road. Police confirmed that there was an earlier chase and accident with a rolled vehicle at the intersection. A deputy, identified as Deputy Earnest Dennard, was helping to direct traffic in the area when he was suddenly struck by a passenger vehicle. Dennard was using emergency lights and flashlights and was visible at the time of the accident.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. Dennard received a shoulder injury and a sprained ankle in the accident, as well as several abrasions. However, he is expected to fully recover.
The roadway was blocked at the intersection for a period of time, and traffic was redirected until the scene was cleared. The driver of the vehicle that struck Dennard, who has since been identified as Marilynn Brown, was charged with failing to obey an authorized individual directing traffic.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues at this time.
Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the deputy injured in this accident with hopes of a full recovery.
