Pedestrian Crashes in South Carolina
A pedestrian has very little protection in the event of a collision. As a result, they are more likely to sustain potentially fatal injuries. There were 5,376 pedestrian deaths in the United States in 2015. According to national statistics, a pedestrian was killed every 1.6 hours on average that year, with a pedestrian injury every 7.5 minutes. Pedestrian fatalities are on the rise in the United States, with a nearly 10% increase in 2015.
Pedestrians are at a serious disadvantage when involved in a crash with a motor vehicle and are more likely to suffer from life-threatening injuries. This has contributed to a substantial rise in pedestrian fatalities nationwide. Unlike those traveling in passenger cars, pedestrians have little protection from the full impact of an accident. The resulting injuries can be life-changing. Drivers are required to yield the right of way and share the road with pedestrians. When they fail to do so, they can be held liable under state law.
