Deadly Motorcycle Crashes in South Carolina
Riders who were not wearing helmets were involved in nearly 73% of fatal motorcycle accidents in South Carolina between 2011 and 2015. Motorcycle riders are nearly 27 times more likely to be killed in a car accident, according to crash statistics, and nearly 80% of motorcycle accidents result in death or serious injury. South Carolina has a higher than average rate of fatal motorcycle accidents.
Even if they take all necessary safety precautions, motorcycle riders have little protection when colliding with a motor vehicle. They are more likely to sustain serious to life-threatening injuries in the event of a collision. Potholes, ice, cracks, and slick roads make motorcycles much more vulnerable to common road hazards. Motorcycle accidents can leave riders paralyzed, amputees, or with other permanent disabilities that make living their lives as they did before difficult.
