South Carolina’s Auto Crash Injuries

Inexperienced motorists are a common cause of accidents. South Carolina has a higher-than-average rate of fatal automobile accidents, and careless or reckless driving is a major contributing factor. Behaviors such as tailgating, speeding, and failing to yield to oncoming traffic are all considered reckless driving by the police. Drinking and driving is a big issue in South Carolina, resulting in hundreds of yearly deaths.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety uses annual information to provide in-depth reports for the whole state. A quick look at the numbers, however, shows that there are far too many accidents every year on South Carolina’s highways. Sadly, over 35,000 individuals were hurt in the state last year.

Meanwhile, the other accidents were written off as random occurrences. On South Carolina highways, 58,550 injuries were recorded in 2018, down from over 60,000 the year before.

Human mistake accounts for over 96% of all crashes that result in injuries. Of the 38,130 incidents of nonfatal injuries, more than 11%, or 11,120, were partially ascribed to excessive speed. In 8,840 of these incidents, the driver did not yield the right of way. Half of all accidents that end in harm may be attributed to these two causes. Out of the total 960 fatal incidents, 220 included excessive speed, and 90, or around 30%, had a failure to yield.
