Dunwoody, GA – Crash with 18-Wheeler Injuries Three, Causes Road Closure on I-285 Near Ashford Dunwoody Rd

Dunwoody, GA (August 29, 2022) – A fiery crash involving an 18-wheeler caused a half-day closure of Interstate 285 on Monday, August 29th in Dunwoody.

Crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation labored throughout the night to make the interstate passable, including performing emergency re-paving, after a serious accident. Inspectors were called out to check the structural integrity of the overpass before officials would reopen Ashford-Dunwoody Road.

According to Dunwoody police, at about 3:00 p.m., four vehicles were traversing I-285 when one vehicle attempted to overtake another that was stopped in traffic, causing a chain-reaction accident. One of the involved vehicles, an 18-wheeler hauling beer, struck a passenger vehicle, shoving it into a barrier and flipping another vehicle onto its side.

The truck came to an uncontrolled stop underneath the Ashford-Dunwoody Road overpass where it caught fire.

Three people were taken to area hospitals with various degrees of trauma.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the vehicle fire in about 40 minutes. The area was closed to traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, for about 14 hours.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
