Cornelia, GA – Police Officer Involved in Rear-End Collision on GA-105
Cornelia, GA (May 19, 2022) – A police officer was cited after they were involved in a rear-end accident that took place on a major roadway in Cornelia on Tuesday, May 17.
According to Cornelia Police, the accident happened on GA-105 around the area of Sweetbriar Drive. Police confirmed that an officer was working on the night shift when he received a text on his phone. He looked down to see who was texting him, which was when his cruiser slammed into the back of a Toyota 4 Runner. The 4 Runner was stopped as the driver waited for another vehicle in front of it to turn.
Paramedics, fire crews, and other local responders were called to the scene to assist. A 17-year-old male high school student and his teen girlfriend were in the 4 Runner. The teens both sustained injuries in the accident but are expected to fully recover. However, both vehicles were severely damaged as a result.
The officer was given a traffic ticket for violating the law through his actions.
The roadway was blocked in several lanes for a period of time following the collision. Police quickly worked to clear the scene.
