Motorcycle Crashes in South Carolina
Between 2011 and 2015, non-helmeted riders were involved in nearly 73% of fatal motorcycle accidents in South Carolina. According to crash statistics, motorcycle riders are nearly 27 times more likely to be killed in a car accident, with nearly 80% of motorcycle accidents resulting in death or serious injury. The rate of fatal motorcycle accidents in South Carolina is higher than the national average.
Motorcyclists, even when they follow the necessary safety protocol, have little protection when colliding with a motor vehicle. This places them at greater risk of suffering serious to life-threatening injuries in the event of a collision. Common road hazards such as potholes, ice, cracks, or slick roads are a much greater risk for motorcyclists. Motorcycle crashes can leave riders paralyzed, as amputees, or with other types of permanent disability that can greatly impact their ability to live their lives as they once could.
