Staying Safe When Your State Reopens

Staying Safe When Your State Reopens

Keeping Our Communities Safe Through Social Distancing

After nearly two months of statewide “stay at home” and “shelter in place” orders to protect against the COVID-19 pandemic, most states in America have started to reopen for business again. But as we saw with the initial shutdown process, each state has gone a different way in deciding when – and how – to reopen its businesses, schools, and other institutions. Here in Georgia, for example, the state’s shelter in place order expired on April 30th, and a week before that deadline, Governor Brian Kemp took action to reopen large parts of the economy. California, however, will be reopened in stages, and it is expected that this process could last through July or August.

Regardless of where you live, it’s important to remember that COVID-19 is still a dangerous presence in our communities, especially for the elderly and those with underlying conditions. At Monge & Associates, we’re urging all of our clients, colleagues, and associates to practice the social distancing guidelines laid out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Those with a higher risk of severe COVID-19 illness should also consider extra precautions, such as continuing to shelter in place for as long as possible.

Tips for Social Distancing and COVID-19 Prevention

Here’s a quick summary of the social distancing and safety tips issued by the CDC:

  • Stay 6 feet away from others. Because the COVID-19 virus spreads through respiratory droplets and close contact, everyone is encouraged to stay 6 feet (or 2 arms’ lengths) away from others. Businesses will also be expected to implement social distancing guidelines when they reopen, as seen with the 39 social distancing requirements recently laid out for Georgia’s dine-in restaurants.
  • Keep your hands clean. When in public, wash your hands and use hand sanitizer whenever you have a chance. In particular, do not touch your face until you have had a chance to wash your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and warm water.
  • Wear a cloth face covering. A simple cloth face covering or non-medical mask can add some additional protection in public – but only if you also observe the 6-foot distancing rule and ensure that the covering hides your nose and mouth.
  • Avoid group gatherings. Meeting up with people outside your household can still introduce a heightened risk of COVID-19, even if you believe it’s safe to gather with a particular group. Kids and teens should stay away from in-person playdates and gatherings too, as they are not immune and may spread the virus without even realizing it.
  • Make use of work-from-home policies and delivery services. Many people simply do not have the option to work from home or use delivery services. If you do have this option, however, you should consider using it whenever possible as a substitute for in-person work and shopping.

During this difficult and chaotic time, Monge & Associates hopes that you and your family can stay safe from the worst of the virus. As personal injury lawyers and consumer safety advocates, we believe that it’s important for us to share accurate and helpful information about the public health risks of COVID-19. We are also still open for business and can help you navigate any legal claims for car accidents, on-the-job injuries, and more, including negligence related to COVID-19.
