Athens, GA – Head-on Collision Leads to Injuries on Talmadge Dr 

Athens, GA (June 16, 2022) – Around 12:25 p.m. on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 15, injuries were reported in a head-on collision in Athens. 

According to Georgia State Patrol officials, the accident happened on Talmadge Drive around the area of the Habersham County line. Police confirmed that 43-year-old Joseph Austin was traveling in the area when he lost control of his vehicle due to reasons that are not entirely known. His vehicle traveled into the path of a Toyota Tacoma being operated by a 72-year-old Virginia Ramey. The two vehicles collided head-on with each other, leading to extensive damage. 

Several local responders, including paramedics and fire crews, were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. Both drivers, as well as two passengers inside Austin’s vehicle, received serious injuries in the collision. The passengers were identified as 20-year-old John Lumpkin and 77-year-old Jimmy McDonald. The parties were transported to local hospitals for treatment. 

Due to the severity of the collision, several lanes of traffic were blocked for some time. Police quickly worked to clear the scene. 

Police confirmed that Austin is suspected of driving under the influence at the time of the crash. 

No further details have been released. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.
