Alto, GA (December 21, 2022) – A pedestrian was injured in an accident that took place outside of a prison on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 21.

According to Georgia State Patrol officials, the accident happened at 3:17 p.m. on Gainesville Highway around the area of Smokey Road and the Lee Arrendale State Prison. Police confirmed that a pedestrian was walking in the area when he was suddenly struck by the passenger side mirror of a silver Honda Civic. Both the man and the vehicle were traveling south at the time. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident.

Several responders, including Alto paramedics and fire crews, were called to the scene to help those in need. The pedestrian, who has since been identified as Patrick McCollum, was injured in the accident. He was alert and talking when treated at the scene by paramedics but was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for further treatment.

Due to the severity of the accident, a portion of the road was blocked for some time. Police worked to clear the scene quickly so traffic could return to normal.

No further details have been released, but police continue their investigation into the collision at this time.
