Distracted Driving Accidents Are on the Rise in Georgia

The Atlanta distracted driving accident lawyers of The Accident & Disability Attorneys of Monge & Associates have seen a rise in motor vehicle accidents. The increase has accompanied advances in personal electronics. Cell phones and texting are the leading culprits of distracted driving.

But a distracted driving accident can be caused by anything that takes a driver’s attention off the road. Using an iPod or other audio or visual device, reading a map or consulting a GPS unit can cause a crash. Eating, drinking or grooming can trigger a wreck as well.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows that distracted driving kills nearly 5,500 people and injures an estimated 448,000 per year across the country. Distracted driving is a matter of negligence and recklessness. Lawmakers have begun to take notice. Individual states, including Georgia, have adopted specific laws covering distracted driving.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in an auto accident blamed on distracted driving, contact The Accident & Disability Attorneys of Monge & Associates today or use our online contact form. Distracted Driving Causes Atlanta Accidents

A recent Governors Highway Safety Association study found that distractions are associated with 15 to 25 percent of crashes. These crashes can cause minor property damage or death. The GHSA says cell phone use increases crash risk, and texting likely increases crash risk more than cell phone use. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) says that sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. That’s the equivalent – at 55 mph – of driving the length of an entire football field blind. Additional studies and statistics about distracted driving accidents abound.

The variety of driver distractions cited in accident studies include:

  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone or smart phone
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system (GPS)
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player.

Starting in 2012, Georgia law bars drivers under the age of 18 from using both hand-held and hands-free cell phones. Texting is prohibited for all drivers. Teenagers also cannot use computers while driving. School bus operators in Georgia are not allowed to use cell phones while driving if passengers are present. Distracted drivers can be fined up to $150. If there’s been an accident, more charges and stiffer penalties are likely.

Additional distracted driving legislation in Georgia is continuously discussed and considered. Educational programs on the state and national levels are routinely held. All who study auto accidents understand that distracted driving represents a serious highway safety issue.
